Every year, more and more compressed natural gas vehicles hit the road. CNG can fuel anything from a sedan to a semi-truck, and many vehicle manufacturers and municipalities are starting to see the benefits of using this fuel. CNG is still picking up the pace in the US—there are about 150,000 CNG vehicles in the US compared to 15.2 million throughout the world. Even though it is still working hard earning a name for itself, you can still find plenty of vehicles in your neighborhood. Take a look at some of the vehicles that CNG is fueling on the roads today.
Sedans
Although you won’t find many CNG-powered sedans in the US, that all could change with the 2016 Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel. This vehicle gives drivers CNG or gasoline options, making it the only CNG sedan available to North American consumers. Hopefully this starts the trend, and more and more CNG sedans start debuting over the next few years.
Pickup Trucks/SUVs
You’d never tell just by looking at them, but some of the pickup trucks you see on the road today are powered by CNG. Both the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado have the option of running on natural gas or petroleum-based fuels. Although they may not be as widespread, more vehicle manufacturers are starting to recognize the advantages and make vehicles that run on natural gas.
Buses
Many municipalities have started to transition their bus fleets to CNG. In fact, Dallas, Los Angeles, Denver, Atlanta, and many other larger US cities have transit bus fleets that run on CNG. Many airports also use CNG-powered buses for their shuttles. By using CNG, these municipalities and companies are generating a positive impact on the environment while also saving money on fuel costs and maintenance.
Larger Fleet Operators
Besides buses, compressed natural gas is also a popular fuel choice for larger fleet operators such as garbage trucks and concrete mixers. Since these vehicles tend to experience high mileage, CNG offers a fuel savings that these fleet operators can’t ignore.
