CNG vs LNG: Which Fuel is Right for Your Fleet?

October 12, 2020

Natural gas offers many benefits, which is why it has been used in the transportation industry for many years. It is safe, reliable, and very easy to use, but since it comes in many different forms, those new to the natural gas scene may have a hard time determining which one is the right choice. Compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) are two primary natural gases that often get compared when fleet managers are trying to decide on the best option.

CNG and LNG refer to how the fuel is stored on the vehicle. CNG is methane gas that is compressed to 3,600 psi in a high-pressure storage tank. LNG is methane that is cryogenically frozen to -260 degrees Fahrenheit and kept in an insulated tank. Both are viable fuel sources, so which is the right choice for you?

Compressed Natural Gas

CNG is stored in high-pressure tanks and regulated through a series of regulators down to 100 psi as it’s delivered to the engine. These tanks are required to be a pressurized vessel, so they take up a larger area of space and can be relatively heavier than a typical fuel tank. However, CNG is also lighter than air, which means it will dissipate in the event of a leak. It also has an unlimited hold time, so there is no fuel loss if unused. This gives it a safety advantage over LNG. In addition, it is also very easy to refuel CNG at a fueling station.

Liquefied Natural Gas

LNG is stored as a cryogenic liquid, which allows it to take up less storage space on the vehicle than CNG. It also offers an energy density that is comparable to diesel fuel, which makes it attractive to many long-haul trucking companies. While it has its benefits, it also has its disadvantages. LNG has a limited hold time, so it will start to vent if not used. LNG is also more difficult to refuel compared to CNG, as it requires special handling and equipment.

As with any major business decision, deciding which fuel choice is right for your fleet will require some research. Ozinga offers CNG solutions that fit your fleet’s fueling needs. Contact one of our energy specialists today and learn more about the benefits of CNG.
